Montana Moss Agate is formed from chalcedony, one of the many types of quartz. Chalcedony has a waxy luster and can be semitransparent or translucent. It is found in a wide range of colors, but the colors most common are white to gray, grayish-blue or a shade of pale brown ranging to almost black.
Found in the Yellowstone River Basin of southeastern Montana it is often clear but can have a translucent white, gray, yellowish, or reddish brown base color.
